The Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
